Former Blizzard boss in a message to employees: “I let you down”

Blizzard co-founder and former studio head Mike Morheim tweeted his own commentary on the company’s sexual harassment and discrimination allegations. In a rather long letter, Mike specifically addressed the studio staff:

To all Blizzard women who have encountered this, I will say – I deeply apologize for letting you down. I hear you, I believe you and I am sorry that I let you down.

Morheim helped found the studio that produced the Diablo series and launched one of the most popular MMORPGs of all time, World of Warcraft. Under Mike, Blizzard has become a world-renowned studio with Warcraft, StarCraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch under its belt. After leaving Blizzard in 2018, Mike founded a new studio, Dreamhaven.

However, according to court documents from a California court based on a two-year investigation, bro culture existed at Blizzard since Morheim.

In the letter, Mike says he can and will use his influence to drive positive change and fight sexism, discrimination and harassment.

News of the lawsuit against Activision Blizzard broke out on July 21st. Since then, former Blizzard employees have spoken out on social media about how they faced negative experiences – in person or witnessed harassment. Blizzard’s current developers are trying to distance themselves from official statements , calling for the need for change in the company.

It is impossible to say what the consequences of this situation will be. Will the scandal affect game development? Probably.
