James Gunn: Superhero movies will get boring if they don’t change

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad: Mission Bash, in an interview with The Irish Times, predicted the imminent demise of superhero films if they don’t change.

The director recalled the sad example of westerns and war films. Gunn said that films about superheroes already seem incredibly boring to him.

We all know what happened to westerns and military tapes. I don’t know, I think you don’t have to be a genius to figure out that there is some kind of cycle for this kind of paintings. The only hope for the salvation of comic and superhero films is to change them.

This is a very stupid movie, which in its mass seems to me now rather boring.

However, Gunn believes that there are people in the film industry who are trying to experiment with superhero cinema. He also noted that there are people in the world who generally look at the genre differently, for example, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, who created The Guardians.

There are people who try to do something different with superhero films, so my words are not 100% rule, but a bunch of pictures of this genre are very boring to watch.

As for me, I just try to bring other elements to the genre.

“Suicide Squad: Mission Bash” hits theaters on August 5th.
