Microsoft posted a blog on its website announcing that the DirectStorage API is already available to developers. In addition, the company said that the technology will be available not only on Windows 11, but also on Windows 10, although it previously said otherwise.
The DirectStorage SDK is available for Windows 10, version 1909 and above. The same goes for DirectX 12 and the release version of the DirectStorage API. However, Microsoft notes that the technology will perform best on Windows 11, since the OS was developed with DirectStorage in mind.
DirectStorage is a technology first added to the new Xbox consoles that leverages the power of NVMe SSDs to stream assets from storage directly to the GPU, bypassing potential CPU bottlenecks.
