The founder and head of Housemarque, Ilari Kuittinen, said in an interview that several companies wanted to acquire the studio at once, but it was decided to conclude a contract with Sony.
First of all, the decision was influenced by the fact that the company was interested in the direction in which the studio was moving.
During our discussions, it became clear that Sony wants to buy us because we are doing what others are not doing.
The studio really develops games in not very massive and popular genres. For example, Returnal has become the studio’s largest game in its long history. And it can be called the first big bagel. Yes, and very hardcore.
The game had some issues like bugs that were quickly fixed. The remaining contentious issue is keeping within the same race. In general, the game was greeted very positively for the dynamic gameplay. The same applies to other games of the studio such as Resogun, Alienation, Nex Machina and Matterfall.
As for offers to buy Housemarque, they were made by companies from China, Sweden and the United States. Suspects may include Tencent, Embracer Group, EA, Activision, Take-Two and Microsoft. Although the head of the studio himself did not hint at anyone in particular.
As the developers said earlier, their next game, thanks to the purchase, will become even larger and more ambitious than Returnal, while the studio will not abandon its own vision with an emphasis on gameplay, most often hardcore.
