In the past, CD Projekt RED has repeatedly celebrated the multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077, which was planned to be released after the release of major story additions for the main game. That is, not earlier than the end of 2022. The studio did not name the exact dates, but this component was clearly not a priority for the team.
However, CDPR President Adam Kaczynski announced today that the studio is changing its game development strategy . Among other things, we are talking about multiplayer games. Adam noted that the company will focus on introducing multiplayer into all of its projects, for which it is creating network technology that can be implemented in all games.
Sounds like CDPR is also interested in service games. But in the light of such changes, there can be sacrifices. In particular, the multiplayer Cyberpunk 2077.
Kichinski said bluntly that the game’s networking component is in limbo:
We hinted in the past that our next AAA project would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we decided to revise the plan with a new systematic and flexible approach, instead of focusing on one big online project or game, we will one day add online to all franchises …
This raises questions about the future of Cyberpunk multiplayer, which was developed in parallel with Cyberpunk 2077. It seems that the studio will either seriously delay the release of the mode, or even cancel it altogether, at least in its original form.
