Sony will censor violence in Japanese games

The issue of portraying violence and brutality in video games has always been a controversial topic in the community. On the one hand, there are age ratings and standards, on the other, politicians use violence in games to promote their platform and propagate certain views. At the same time, social groups advocate a decrease in the level of violence, motivating this by expanding the potential audience. However, not many developers follow these guidelines.

Now the Japanese edition of GameSpark has reported that Sony is asking some developers to reduce the level of violence in projects. Hiroshi Matsuyama, head of local Cyberconnect2 studio, spoke about Sony’s motivation to make changes to the Naruto Ultimate series. One of the characters in the game, Minato Namikaze, lacked an arm in the original story, but was returned on Sony’s recommendation.

The fact is that according to the policy of Sony Interactive Entertainment, tied to the Japanese rating organization CERO, games should not include characters that have a human appearance and are devoid of limbs.

Hiroshi notes that in another game from Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, one of the characters was also missing an arm. But in this case, the feature didn’t have to be cut out due to the differences between the two games. What differences are in question, the developer did not explain, but among the two titles Naruto Ultimate looks more realistic. It is also not clear if this requirement only applies to games developed in Japan or international releases as well.

Sony’s position on this issue is not entirely clear. If a company follows the CERO guidelines for Japanese games, then the publisher has no options other than censorship. After all, Sony published The Last of Us 2 – compared to it, Naruto Ultimate is a lullaby.
