Indie studio accuses Respawn of plagiarizing one of its characters' designs for Apex Legends

Apex Legends Season 8  brings a new legend, Walter “Fuze” Fitzroy. Perhaps Respawn didn’t come up with a clean slate. Indie studio NOWAA claims the studio stole the hero from its yet to be released BulletVille game.

In it, a similar character is called rather trite – Hunter.

We’re glad the Apex Legends team liked Hunter’s style to the point that they wanted to recreate it in Apex Legends – we even hoped for a possible crossover! However, we fear that, as a small indie studio whose game has not yet been released, we will be told that we stole the character design from Apex Legends, which of course is not the case.

There are indeed a lot of similarities between the characters: a skull on a belt, a robotic arm, a little gray hair, a mustache, a cyber patch on the left eye, a cowboy holster, cropped gloves, a mustache, and more. Each of them has a rocket launcher.

NOWAA previously negotiated BulletVille under EA’s wing and even sent demos to the company in October and November. It’s unlikely that EA Originals and Respawn are related in any way. The indie studio itself is also not averse to appropriating ideas. Her character Angel is very reminiscent of Mercy from Overwatch.

NOWAA believes that legal litigation with EA will cost her too much time and still relies on the game’s publisher, so it is ready to redesign the character.

Apex Legends Season 8 kicks off on February 2 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
