Details of an unreleased Evangelion remake that was similar to Attack on Titans

An excerpt from the book “Godzilla and Evangelion” published in 2016 was published on the Japanese resource Bunshun Online. The book gave a description of a remake of “Evangelion”, which was supposed to be released in the 90s, but the idea was abandoned.

The remake was supposed to resemble the current anime “Attack on Titans”. It was planned to shoot a two-hour film with a completely different plot in comparison with the rebuild, which premiered back in 2009.

In the world of Evangelion, there is a city protected by A.T. field. The only way to communicate with the outside world is a huge bridge through which the angels enter the city. At the same time, they also eat people.

Director Hideaki Anno then talked about human fears and concluded that fear of being eaten was the greatest of all. He himself was impressed by what he saw in the films Gamera vs. Giaos (1967) and Gamera: Defender of the Universe (1995).

In the modern rebuild of Evangelion, the pilot fights inside the robot, while in a special capsule filled with liquid. This refers to how the fetus is inside the mother. However, in the 90s, there was an idea to make a closer connection between Evangelion and humans. The pilot had to directly enter the robot’s womb and merge with it. Removing the person would require surgery.

At the moment, the fourth Evangelion film: 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon A Time is being prepared for the premiere, the premiere of which has been postponed indefinitely. The reason for the next transfer of the final film in the tetralogy Rebuild of Evangelion was the coronavirus pandemic.
