Analytical company NPD Group has published data on game sales in the United States for 2020. The US is the second most lucrative gaming market in the world after China, but the latter is ruled by shareware. So the US performance is important for analyzing the market as a whole.
In 2020, US residents spent 27% on games than a year earlier – $ 56.9 billion. 86% of that $ 48.9 billion was spent on the games themselves, with the remainder on consoles and accessories.
The best-selling game of 2020 was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. In second place is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Games in the Call of Duty series topped the ranking for the 12th consecutive year.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons came in third. The game reached the highest figure in Nintendo history for physical sales in dollar terms since Wii Fit Plus in 2010.
As for Sony games, The Last of Us: Part 2 became the best-selling game. In 7 months of sales, the game was able to become the third best-selling PlayStation game after Spider-Man and God of War, which took the first and second places, respectively.
Sales of Nintendo and Cyberpunk 2077 games were not counted.
