A recent Heritage Auction sold the first issue of the 1940 Batman comic strip. The deal amounted to $ 2.2 million, which was an absolute record for a comic book featuring the Dark Knight.
The name of the new owner was not announced.
The comic has been in the hands of collector Billy Gates (not affiliated with the billionaire) for over 40 years. Gates bought a rare copy in 1979 for three thousand dollars – at a time when collecting comics was still in its infancy, it was a lot of money. In 2019, after his death, Gates donated the collection to his son.
Another rare DC comic, Detective Comics # 27, where Batman first appears, was auctioned in November. It was bought for $ 1.5 million. The most “expensive” comic is still Action Comics # 1 – it sold for an incredible $ 3.2 million.
