According to a report by the NPD Group, 16.2 million graphic novels were sold in the US in 2020. The category showed great growth – 29.1%. They include a variety of full-fledged stories and collections of manga and comics. They are most often published in hardcover and are intended for an adult audience.
The main hits were five volumes of My Hero Academia, two volumes of Strange Planet, the Demon Slayer manga, the horror horror Uzumaki by Junju Ito, and the comic strip The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse came first. The latter is sold in huge numbers all over the world and receives many awards.
Manga was bought most of all, its sales increased by 43.7%.
Total sales of printed books also rose 8.2%. The most popular and growing category was fantasy for children – its sales reached 18 million and grew by 11%.
