The roguelike shooter Returnal remains one of the few PS5 titles to receive regular news updates and gameplay updates. A little more than two months before the release, but the developers are actively talking about the mechanics and features of the title.
In a new interview, the creative director of Housemarque studio Harry Kruger said that Returnal should show the player the value of unlimited gameplay, and the developers want to introduce players to the next generation of rogue-like shooters.
In doing so, the studio uses the best practices of its past games to create a beautiful, deep and scary sci-fi thriller. Naturally, they drew inspiration from space horror movies. According to Kruger, when creating the monsters they relied on the images of sea monsters, and the luminescent highlights will contrast with the tentacles.
An important theme of Returnal was the closed time circle in which the heroine named Selena found herself. Another attempt to break it, the goal of the game, will not be a routine, because players will find something new for themselves on the planet they crashed on, and also get to know their character better. The developers will not lay out all the cards on the table and will leave the player room for imagination and reflection.
Krueger said that the developers are trying to find a balance of permanent death so that players have excitement, satisfaction from the race and the desire to start over. The developers want to create a vast and rich world with a progression system that will open up more options for the player with more immersion.
Players will find new weapons, shortcuts, “gameplay advantages” so that each next race will be more interesting, more difficult and will open up something new. But still, the key factor for success will be the player’s skill, which will also grow as you progress, so the next attempt, as a result of which Selena breaks out of the time loop, will be a moment of triumph.
Release Returnal be held on 19 March. The shooter will be a PS5 exclusive.
