Variety published a note in which it predicted a new wave of movie premieres for Hollywood. It all started with the fact that the owner of the Dutch cinema network announced that the premiere of the new “Bond” was pushed to November (this is not confirmed). Later in the evening it became known about the official transfer of “Morbius” with Jared Leto.
Journalists are confident that Hollywood film studios will think about their premiere schedule and “move” films from the designated dates to new ones. Two factors that are important for the American market do not add pimism either:
- Most cinemas are still closed, and the most lucrative locations in New York and Los Angeles will not open anytime soon due to coronavirus
- Wonder Woman 1984’s box office grossing just $ 130 million
At least 10 large-budget premieres are planned for the first half of the year, with which studios will now have to look for a way out. And there is Warner Bros. and Disney may well move some of them, and give others to their streaming services, but Sony and Paramount must come up with something. One option is to sell the picture to online cinemas Netflix or Amazon who already have experience in buying movies. Another is to put the film on the shelf and wait for the resolution of the coronavirus crisis, which has no end in sight. The problem is that you can’t transfer movies endlessly.
Naturally, the problem only concerns blockbusters. Movies with small budgets can easily be released on streaming platforms with the possibility of buying for a fixed amount and viewers who miss movies will watch at home and beat back production costs, but the conditional “Fast and Furious 9” will be difficult to pull off.
Most likely, the transfer of “Morbius” was the first big bell, and this month we will have a lot of news that Studio X decided to postpone the premiere of their film six months in advance, in the hope that the situation with coronavirus will be resolved during this time, and vaccines will become more affordable … At the same time, Hollywood must understand that the rules of the game have changed, which means that alternative solutions must be sought.
