The PC industry ended 2020 with strong quarterly growth of 25% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. Probably tougher quarantine measures around the world affected. In total, a record 90.3 million desktops, laptops and workstations were shipped.
This puts 2020 on a positive note, with overall PC shipments up 11% year-over-year to nearly 300 million units. This is the best annual market growth since 2010 and the highest shipment volume since 2014.
Alas, not all sectors grew. Desktop computers fell by 20%, but laptop shipments grew significantly – by 44%. They accounted for 79% of the entire industry in 2020 and reached 235.1 million units.
Lenovo was the industry leader with 72 million PCs in the quarter.
With the advent of vaccines against the COVID-19 coronavirus, it may seem like the market will stop growing, but analysts are very optimistic about the industry’s outlook.
