THR has announced that Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch cartoon will be released on HBO’s Max streaming service. The digital premiere is expected on February 5, while the release in the Russian distribution will be on March 25.
This is the studio’s first 3D project, directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao’s son. The story of Earwig and the Witch is based on the novel of the same name by British writer Diana Wynn Jones. This is the second work of the author to be filmed by Ghibli. The first was Howl’s Moving Castle.
The plot is dedicated to a girl named Irvig. She lives in an orphanage, which has become her home, but one day everything changes – the heroine has adoptive parents who took her to their eerie mystical home. Despite the fact that the adoptive mother turns out to be a witch, together with the talking cat, Irvig is determined to become the master of new circumstances.
Earwig and the Witch will be the first Ghibli cartoon in six years. Hayao himself is engaged in the anime Kimitachi wa dou ikiru ka? (How are you?), Which will be released not earlier than in two or three years.
