Gamedev A talk on the importance of cinematic environments in Uncharted 4

The official GDC channel has published a big talk by two Naughty Dog employees Christian Nakat and Erik Pangilinan, who talked about creating a cinematic environment in Uncharted 4 .

The video begins by explaining one of the key scenes in the game, when Elena realizes that Nate lied to her and went to Madagascar. Eric talks about subtle details that help create the right mood for a scene. For example, Nathan’s partners are far away, they cannot help him, so he feels weaker in the scene than Elena, who is closer to the walls.

Also, the straight lines of the paintings behind Elena give the impression of a more aggressive behavior than the round objects behind Nathan. Sally and Sam’s characters in the scene show different sides of Drake: the first reflects his awareness, and the second reflects his propensity for adventure and selfishness.

Even building a room behind Drake’s back speaks volumes between the characters. A notch in the wall visually unites Sally and Nathan, while the other in the other part of the room by the door is Sam – the outsider of the team.

From the report, Naughty Dog pays attention to every detail when directing scenes.

Uncharted 4 was released on May 10, 2016 on PS4.
