Despite the huge amount of content, Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have that many really chic and fun quests. For CD Projekt RED, the megacorporation-controlled world of transhuman technology was to be the source of countless new scenarios. But that didn’t happen. Which is strange, because The Witcher 3 had a lot of memorable moments, so we expected something similar from the new release of the Polish studio.
However, some tasks in Cyberpunk 2077 managed to make a good impression: in one case it was due to the complex design of the levels, in others – the emotionality of the characters, humor or unusual disclosure of dizzying cyberpunk themes.
Spoilers! Perhaps someone did not understand from the title of the article, therefore: here is collected information concerning the plot and side missions of Cyberpunk 2077. If you do not want to catch a bunch of spoilers, it is better to stop right now. Original publication: PCGamer
Reintegration / Resuscitation
It’s hard to make friends when you’re an autonomous artificial intelligence in charge of an entire taxi fleet. So when the core of Delamayne splits into personalities, several rebellious autonomous and lonely unmanned taxis appear in the city. Fortunately for Dee, Vee has nowhere to rush and nothing else to do but chase these cars all over Night City: dissuade one from suicide, try to incapacitate another, or engage in dialogue with a third about the meaning of being. V even has to coax the arrogant, but at the same time goofy personality of Delamayne, recreated in the image of GlaDOS from Portal.
This is a great side quest that doesn’t require much attention and can be completed in parallel with other quests and missions. Each car has its own flavor: an interesting conversation or a completely new approach to gameplay. And then the final quest awaits us – penetration into the womb of Delamayne, where there is a real war between the central core and its autonomous fragments. Vee faces a deadly streak of obstacles and tough choices, touching upon some of the most interesting cyberpunk themes associated with the nature of existence. Depending on the choice, you can achieve a happy ending.
Street Justice (quest chain)
Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell about this task without spoiling the wild ending. The main thing that intrigues and delights is that the awareness of everything that is happening comes gradually. It all starts with a simple order involving the murder of a person. It looks like even V is not interested in it. But things soon get complicated.
It’s hard to sympathize with the characters – they are all terrible in their own way. But the task, which initially looks like a regular order, requiring you to move from point A to point B, in fact turns out to be something more. This mission touches on many different topics, from religion and forgiveness to corporate greed and exploitation. And along the way, there are some interesting solutions.
Riders of the storm
In Cyberpunk 2077, we are constantly shooting someone or something. But there are not many tasks here that would make you feel like a real super-soldier skillfully wielding a katana. This is why I liked the simplicity of Riders on the Storm, a quest in which Panam asks V for help in rescuing Saul, who was kidnapped by rusty stilettos. Their camp is quite huge, so there are several ways of approach at once.
Even if you are eventually discovered, it will be nice to fight your way through enemy redoubts in the future to save the nomad. The quest ends with an overnight stay in an abandoned trailer. And here’s an intimate conversation – one of those few moments where Cyberpunk really wins from its chosen first-person perspective.
How to get a star from the sky
What will Hitman be the other way around? Blue Moon, a member of the famous pop group Us Cracks, asks V for help: someone is following her. The fan has been harassing her for a long time, but in recent days he has moved on to threats of violent reprisals. As a result, V agrees to observe the strolling Blue Moon and at the same time try to identify a mysterious madman among the crowd of passers-by.
After that, you need to keep an eye on the Blue Moon, identify all who are suspicious of themselves, and try to find a maniac. This rather tense scene, which will end in violence in one way or another, is a great demonstration of the quest design possibilities for future expansions. It’s a shame that “How to get a star from the sky” appears at a fairly late stage of the game. Only after you complete several chains of side quests from different characters. Even more frustrating is how little time is devoted to meeting pop stars.
One of the best universal assignments in Cyberpunk 2077. After V met the voodooists and Placid in the Pacific, the character was promised a meeting with Brigitte’s mom if you agree to solve a small problem in an abandoned hypermarket nearby. As a result, a quest begins that hints at a stealth walkthrough and gets more difficult as V infiltrates more distant parts of the complex. This is one of the quests that was talked about a lot in the preview of Cyberpunk 2077, and now I understand the reasons.
The level design inside the mall has been created with great care and attention. And for 40 hours of playing I have never seen such a strong manifestation of these qualities. This is the only moment the level design has really come close to the variety that any of the locations from Deus Ex and Dishonored can boast. Let’s believe that in the future there will be more such quests. It all ends with an exciting dialogue, during which V has to make one of the most controversial decisions.
One of the most intriguing tasks in the game. An argument in favor of a future self-sufficient detective add-on for Cyberpunk 2077 with the investigation of mysterious murders. Here we have an opportunity to get to know our partner, River Ward, but the reason is rather grim – his nephew was kidnapped. The police have already caught the kidnapper, but he is in a coma, so it will not work just to take him and interrogate him. But illegal entry into a medical facility leads Rivera and V to think about how it would be possible to get the necessary information from the brain of a comatose maniac.
We’ll have to delve into his past and find something that could stimulate the subconscious. A good reason to visit the house of River’s nephew and indirectly get acquainted with the kidnapped boyfriend and his uncle. Life for a teenager is not easy, so it is not difficult for an anonymous psychopath to gain confidence in him. River and Vee learn all this when they study the teen’s email. Eventually, you will find a video posted by a criminal – a looping animation in the style of Steamboat Willie, but starring cows hooked up to feeders and something of a happy farmer. This is the key to stimulate the subconscious of the criminal.
The resulting brands are different from those we saw earlier. Childhood abuse and neglect is addressed here. All this is shown to us through the eyes of a killer. We see that his father was constantly cursing and throwing insults. We see a teacher who was never able to help the student. It’s damn sad and surreal: every scene is intertwined with images of cows in these horrible masks. These are brutal shots that you have to rewind back and forth, looking for at least some clues in every corner. Brandans are brutal in themselves, but these recordings have definitely taken it to the next level.
The method works as V and River find out where the maniac kept his victims. And where there might still be teenagers alive. As a result, you have to find a way to get into the barn, surrounded by a minefield and turrets. An ominous energy begins to pulsate along the walls from the very thought that the person who created all this is right now in a hospital on the other side of the city and is himself connected to a feeding tube. And what you see inside is real wildness.
Hunting the Hunter is definitely one of the best quests in the game. A good balance of teamwork with River has been selected: the hero receives small portions of information about family life and Ward’s difficult past, and at the same time tells a gripping story of murders, which broadly covers the problematic technologies of the future that affect both the victim and the perpetrator. This is not a redemption story, but it sheds light on the cycle of abuse and violence that shapes the personality of the killer. Hopefully in future additions to the game there will be an even greater emphasis on detective work.
