The coronavirus pandemic has hit the film industry very hard. Multimillion-dollar franchises are on the shelves, transfers happen one after another, some paintings go to streaming – and all this against the background of a lack of prospects for the recovery of the market.
Analysts estimate that 2020 was the worst box-office year in the U.S. in nearly 40 years. In 1984, the American box office topped $ 4 billion for the first time and grew steadily. In 2020, the films grossed $ 2.2 billion in 12 months and are unlikely to exceed the $ 2.5 mark. To give you an idea of the scale, Avengers: Endgame raised $ 858 million last year, and 2019 home gross was 5 times that.
At the same time, the Chinese market showed itself the brightest. It exceeded $ 9 billion, which is relatively good considering the surrounding events. The problem is that last year there was a record $ 46 billion.
