Yesterday afternoon, Game Informer journalist Liana Rappert wrote that some of the plot scenes in Cyberpunk 2077 are capable of causing an epileptic seizure. Like all big games, the Polish RPG also has a classic text warning about potential seizures, but it’s spelled out in an agreement that none of the gamers read.
The developers themselves agreed with this, thanking them for their attention to this topic. CD Projekt RED promised to figure out how to better notify players about the potential danger of seizures – perhaps showing an additional warning about what awaits them:
The quest itself is associated with the Brayndance headset, which hits V in the eyes with flashes of light. It resembles a real device that doctors use to artificially induce an epileptic seizure in patients. The Game Informer journalist recommended skipping or closing your eyes in these moments if you have had seizures or are not sure that you can react painlessly to a series of bright flashes.
Other reviewers supported Liana and provided some more examples and videos that can cause epileptic seizures in players.
As for CD Projekt RED, the developers will tell you separately about what was invented to warn players in this and other similar situations. Liana had several of these “tricky” moments in the game, so this issue is worth highlighting. Given the abundance of light sources and bright colors, this definitely needs to be done.
In this situation, the most creepy and unpleasant thing was that after Liana told about seizures from the game, literally hundreds of videos began to be sent to her – supposedly with support, but in fact there were flashes and other seizure triggers in the videos. She warned that if a person talks about epilepsy, then you should not run every video that comes in private messages.
It is worth noting that, in some countries, deliberate attempts to induce an epileptic seizure may qualify as an attack with the aim of harming. Especially if a person falls and receives physical harm as a result of such a cyberattack.
If you know that fast flashes of light for even a short time can cause you an attack, then when V takes out a device for Brayndance – it is demonstrated above, it is enough to turn away or close your eyes for a few seconds.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on December 10th.
