Last week, Warner Bros. announced that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will indeed replace Johnny Depp in the third part of “Fantastic Beasts”, taking on the role of Gellert Grindelwald. In an interview with EW, the actor told how his version of the character will differ from Depp.
“I will play it, that makes all the difference [laughs]. This is actually a difficult question. We are still working on it. There must be a connection between what Johnny did and my version. At the same time, I have to make the character unique in my own way, not forgetting to search for several connections and bridges with the past Grindelwald, so as not to move too far away from what Depp has achieved.”
Journalists also asked Mikkelsen about his reaction to getting the role in the circumstances of the scandal between Depp, the tabloid The Sun and Amber Heard.
“From a work point of view, it’s interesting and enjoyable. On the other hand, it is unexpected and sad that they found themselves in such a situation. I wish them both the very best. Hopefully they will be back in service soon.”
Depp’s reason for leaving was a “request” from Warner Bros., after the actor lost a lawsuit against The Sun, which called Depp “beating his wife.” Despite this, the actor will receive exactly an eight-figure fee.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is slated to premiere on July 15, 2022.
