Metro Exodus developers explained why they changed Artyom's blood type

Fans of the “Metro” book series by Dmitry Glukhovsky and fans of the 4A Games franchise know many differences. One such difference is Artyom’s blood type: in the book, the character has the second negative, in  Metro Exodus , the fourth is positive.

This could be taken for the usual inaccuracy or carelessness of the scriptwriters who missed an important detail while reading Metro. However, the developers explained that in fact this step was deliberate and the reason for it is quite reasonable.

Further spoilers for the  Metro Exodus plot :

Towards the end of the game, things are not going well for Artyom, and he needs a blood transfusion to save his life. He needs a lot of blood, and if he had a second negative blood group, problems with donors would inevitably arise.

The developers have made Artyom a “universal recipient”: the blood of any crew member is suitable for him, the main thing is that the Rh matches. Thus, they give value to every life next to the hero: if he saves and protects them, then they will then save him.

Last week, 4A Games and Deep Silver celebrated Metro’s 10th anniversary by sharing their plans for the future and releasing a short trailer featuring the series’ timeline. The starting point was the date of birth of the writer Dmitry Glukhovsky.

In addition, 4A Games plans to update Metro Exodus to nextgen – with ray tracing, improved frame rates, faster downloads and so on. The update will be free. Now the studio is working on something multiplayer within the Metro, the next full-fledged part and another game on the new IP.
