If you thought that Cyberpunk 2077 would be similar to GTA in many mechanics, then this is not entirely true. While the developers of CD Projekt RED certainly used the iconic series as a source of inspiration, the gameplay will be similar only on the surface. GTA games rely on sandbox action, while Cyberpunk 2077 is positioned as an open-world action RPG, which leads to different implementations of even similar elements.
According to Senior Level Designer Miles Toast, in Cyberpunk 2077, players won’t be able to steal any cars from the start, as it does in GTA. Since Cyberpnk 2077 relies on an RPG system, car theft is to a certain extent related to character leveling. Toast noted that players will need to pump certain attributes in order to steal cars. In addition, players will not be able to keep their stolen cars. At the same time, stealing a parked car or in the middle of the road has its own stat requirements.
It is difficult to say how much the role-playing elements of progress will limit freedom of action in comparison with GTA, where we can do whatever we want from the first minutes. According to CD Projekt RED, if you play Cyberpunk 2077 like it’s GTA 5, you can skip a lot of the content.
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for December 10th.
