Nikkei Asia, citing anonymous sources, reported that Sony has entered the final stages of negotiations to acquire the anime-based Crunchyroll service.
Sony has exclusive negotiating rights, so there are no other competitors yet. If the parties successfully agree, Sony will pay nearly $ 1 billion for Crunchyroll.
This will not only allow Sony to enter the service race from its native Japanese side, but it also potentially opens the door to adding Crunchyroll subscriptions, for example, to PS Plus services. Of course, this is just speculation so far.
Crunchyroll has 70 million non-subscription users and three million subscribers in over 200 countries worldwide, including the US and Europe.
