On October 24, Sony unexpectedly released an update for the first part of The Last of Us on PS4, which greatly reduced download times.
YouTube user ElAnalistaDeBits posted a comparison of the download speed on PS4 before and after the patch.
- Loading “New Game” took 90 seconds, and with the patch – about 14. The difference is 6.4 times.
- The chapter “Summer” was completely loaded in 123 seconds against the current 14. The difference is almost 9 times.
In Until Dawn was even more impressive result. It completely got rid of downloads.
Users speculate that games have started to use a new compression algorithm, which has reduced download times.
Updates were also released for God of War 3 , God of War (2018) , Spider-Man and some projects for PS VR, but in their case it is not known what the improvements were. Probably Sony is updating them to work better for backward compatibility on PS5.
