Analyst group Safe Betting Sites has calculated how many consoles Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have sold in history. The latter came first, Sony came second, and the American company closed the top three.
- Nintendo has sold 739.87 million consoles. Highest sales for DS (154.9 million) and Game Boy (118.69 million)
- Sony has sold 541.64 million consoles. PlayStation 2 remains the most popular (157.68 million), followed by PlayStation 4 (112.96 million)
- Microsoft sold 158.92 million devices, 365.56% less than Nintendo. Best-selling console – Xbox 360 (85.8 million), followed by Xbox One (46.36 million)
According to analysts, Nintendo’s success has been driven by a strong lineup of exclusives and popular characters appearing in various games: Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon. Sony has done this because it has consistently emphasized that its consoles are for gamers.
It is important to note that Nintendo entered the console market earlier than other companies. The first device came out in 1983, the first PlayStation came out in 1994, and the Xbox came out in 2001. At the same time, Nintendo has 9 consoles, Sony has 4 (Vita did not participate in the calculation), and Microsoft has 3.
The release of the Xbox Series should change things a bit for Microsoft, as the company has changed its approach and is positioning the console as a gaming station rather than a multimedia device for housewives.
