One of Riot’s most ambitious projects that did not end up as the creators planned.


During these 10 years of creating League of Legends, Riot has had many interesting ideas. In the entire history of the game, there was one case of a character who was canceled twice due to the level of complexity and weak computers of the players.

Today, hardly anyone remembers that there is indeed a hero who was incredibly buggy for several months after release, and which Riot writes about today as an example of how not to make mistakes.

Who was canceled twice and why?

The first version of this character was created at the beginning of League of Legends, in 2009. Hydrosoul, as it was called then, ruled the element of water. He could create a tsunami, cause rain, or a huge wave that would travel across the map, adding additional effects to it.

It quickly turned out that the level of character complexity definitely exceeded the capabilities of Riot and the players’ computers of that time. LoL was too young for these types of mechanics and solutions, so after a few months of planning, Hydrosoul was canceled and buried among other projects.

was a water mage being developed during the League beta. His skills evoked heavy storms, eddies, and other water phenomena. It required a mass of particle effects, and at that time, League’s technology wasn’t very advanced. Since it was impossible to handle such a VFX-demanding hero, Wella ultimately suffered a sad fate when it was canceled. – developers wrote about him.

What was left after him was a very general outline of skills and appearance. Skills were reworked and the appearance was simply thrown in the bin.

The second attempt, or Seth's rise

An attempt to return to the concept from years ago was made only a few years later. The hero’s story, skills and appearance have been reworked. Today he is much more like a character that everyone knows perfectly well.

Seth was taking handfuls from the first version of the hero. Riot made a few compromises, but did not give up global skills. Seth was supposed to cover the entire map with sand, turning it into a real desert and applying additional effects to all characters. The project was incredibly creative and ambitious.

In the game, his skills left sand on the map for a few minutes – the more skills he used, the more sand was produced. If you hit with an enemy standing on sand skill, there was an additional effect such as increased range or a knock up.

After these works, only screenshots and animations remain, showing, among other things, a special ability, i.e. catching the opponent in a sandstorm, visualized as two huge hands.

The project was once again abandoned, while the developers responsible for Seth promised themselves that one day they would finally introduce it.

The last version, which was reworked anyway

The hero who emerged from all these plans was none other than Azir. Some ideas were taken, reworked and reprogrammed. The appearance is very similar to Seth, but you can see that there were some significant changes in this area as well. Designing Azir took a good few months, the character was given a lot of different kinds of skills that were ultimately not introduced for fear of mistakes.

Errors were definitely not avoided. Riot itself admits today that it was one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult to create a hero, and to this day is an example of how characters should not be released for League of Legends.

It’s no secret that Azir’s publication has been one of the most difficult, and perhaps even the most difficult, of the past few years. We fixed Azir’s bugs for a few months after his release, which made playing an already difficult champion seem virtually impossible.

Technical issues aside, balancing Azir has always been a hassle as the kit itself causes trouble. “We totally underestimated how difficult it will be to play with it,” Daniel said. The individual commands or buttons you press in the game seem easy enough – you have to click an enemy to deal damage – but modifying the fundamental system – that is, right-clicking, which usually causes you to perform the basic attack (not the soldiers) – has resulted in an extremely high skill ceiling. However, while his strengths were hidden under some really complicated commands, over time, inhumanly talented players learned to take full advantage of them. For a period of time, if you managed to hit all the right buttons, Azir was repackaged, but otherwise he wasn’t really fit for anything (and is still seen as pretty weak at all levels of the game to this day).

Depending on the level, Azir was either OP or hopeless, or a bug was being fixed, the fix for which added 10 more bugs. The character got smaller and bigger changes, it even went through rework. Where it was calculated that Azir had several hundred bugs in total, which were fixed even a year after its release.

Thus, the hero is the only one who has been canceled twice and, according to the Rioters, could have been canceled and a third time, at least they would have saved a lot of nerves.
